JOb Purpose

The Research Associate is a program management and data analysis position based in Karachi, Pakistan that requires working closely with a local Research Manager and a research team from the University of Chicago, led by Professor Rachel Glennerster, Dr.

Christina Brown and Dr. Maryiam Haroon. The Research Associate will work on the Evaluation component of a large-scale public health program, particularly leading all data-related components whilst providing support to other program components as well.

For this, we are looking for someone with strong quantitative and programming skills (in Stata and / or R). It is an excellent opportunity to gain field experience and learn more about running RCTs, and would be ideal for someone with an interest in pursuing a Masters or PhD in Economics.


  • Project Management Monitor and supervise all project activities, including administrative, financial and operational functions, to ensure that all timelines are met, and protocols are effectively implementedMaintaining and managing documents, forms / surveys (record keeping) and reports.
  • Hire, train and manage surveyorsManage reporting and documentation for the PIs

  • Research Implementation Fulfill report requirements for research grantorComplete necessary documentation for IRB and other university requirementsTravel to urban and rural areas in Sindh for field operations
  • Data Management and Cleaning Ensuring quality of collected data while reporting and solving issues as needed.Conducting data monitoring, troubleshooting, cleaning and analysis.
  • Monitoring data management and complying with data management protocols.

  • Attend in-person and virtual meetings to report progress and challenges.
  • Flexible to work across different time zones for virtual meetings.
  • Other duties considered necessary.
  • Ability to travel within Sindh (up to 40%)
  • Start date : Spring or early Summer 2022


    Required Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters Degree a plus) in Economics, Statistics, Social Sciences, Public Policyor related discipline from a local or internationally-recognized University
  • Required Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in research / program management, especially experience with quantitative program evaluation, impact evaluation
  • Experience in working with randomized controlled trials (RCTs), household / phone survey and survey data (strongly preferred)
  • Required Skills

  • Excellent organizational and data management skills (either Excel, Stata, R or Python)
  • Data cleaning and analysis skills using Stata, R or Python
  • Fluency in English and Urdu; fluency in Sindhi is highly desirable
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with an ability to communicate well and develop effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including everyone from low income households to government officials
  • Comfort working in a variety of settings for example, in rural health clinics
  • Demonstrated ability to manage various tasks effectively and coordinate across projects
  • Prior experience of fieldwork management, conducting interviews, focus groups and surveys
  • A can-do attitude
