Geologist (short term contract)
JOB SUMMARY :
To identify predominating natural hazards within a village, their impact on community infrastructure, critical and priority structures.
Measure intensity and probability of the hazards to mark overall exposure and vulnerability of the community.
To deal with geotechnical, geographical and geophysical aspects of natural hazards that exist in a certain village, and to devise mechanism to make community resilient.
Site specific assessment to mitigate impact and create safe built environment with respect to geo-hazards.
Specific Duties :
Development of HVRA maps and report.
GLOF modelling, GLOF specific Household Education (HHE).
To assess and monitor land sliding sites at different location, mitigation assessments (debris flow, riverine flood and erosion).
Inventory of glaciers, monitoring and assessment of glacial lakes.
Weather data collection for early warning for snow avalanche.
Snow avalanche hazard specific household education.
Site specific assessments & feasibility studies.
Development of activity reports.
Routine Tasks :
Collect and analyze HVRA data from the field. Evaluate relevant reports, documents / drawings / maps and other published information.
Identify, investigate and map all threatening and vulnerable sites as well as different elements at risk according to HVRA methodology;
on the basis of geographic, physiographic, social and scientific clues.
Provide technical input in processes regarding hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment, within the organization or within AKDN network.
Design and update hazard assessment tools and carry out the assessment of specific sites.
Identify, prioritize and select the hazard sites for mitigation. Identify the resources for structural mitigation and assess their capacity.
Monitor mitigation projects to ensure their implementation with respect to time schedule, design and cost.
Execute detail investigation studies through coordination with institutions or key experts.
Create technical reports on basis of data collected from the field or concept paper as a subsequent working document.
Education : At least Bachelor of Science in Geology, Geophysics, Hydrology, Glaciology
Experience, Skills and Competencies : At least 2 years of relevant experience in hazard vulnerability and risk assessments, disaster risk management or disaster risk reduction projects as a risk assessor, or as a weather monitor or meteorologist.
