Location : IrelandDuration : 8 10 weeksFee : To be agreed between Sightsavers and the Consultant IntroductionFounded in , Sightsavers Ireland envisions a world where no one is blind from avoidable causes and where people with disabilities participate equally in society.

Sightsavers Ireland works with Sightsavers globally, through an affiliate agreement, to eliminate avoidable blindness and promote the rights of people with disabilities in 30 countries focussing on Africa and Asia.

We seek to contribute to the Sightsavers global mission through the provision of steady and dependable funding from the Irish market, securing and managing funding from the Irish government, and engaging and influencing the Irish public and policy / decision makers on matters relating to eye health and social inclusion in low- and middle-income countries.

For the past 14 years, Sightsavers Ireland has received funding from Irish Aid for a variety of projects across several African countries.

Since , Irish Aid funding has also supported our public engagement (PE) focussing on increasing the general public’s awareness and understanding of the challenges facing people who are blind and disabled in low and middle-income countries.

Our PE Programme is an important element in delivering our mission and vision.Sightsavers Ireland’s public engagement programme targets a variety of audiences, with the dual objectives of increasing the Irish public’s support for disability inclusive development, and awareness and support for Ireland’s overseas aid programme.

Our current engagement modalities (online and offline) include a schools programme, reaching audiences through established events with large footfall such as festivals and organising our own series of events like exhibitions and talks.

Our PE strategy is consistent with Irish Aid’s A Better World and Civil Society policies which highlight Ireland’s commitment to addressing the rights and needs of marginalised people, including those with disabilities.

Our PE strategy is built on our overseas programme with activities relying on powerful images and inspiring case studies of the beneficiaries of our Irish Aid funded programmes to bring to life the significant challenges facing people living with disabilities in developing countries.

These stories are used to inform and engage how disability can be both a cause and consequence of poverty and encourage understanding of the importance of inclusive development.

  • Sightsavers selects the most appropriate communication channel specific to the audience using a broad range of options available;
  • external communication channels such as press, radio, TV, outdoor, digital and PR activity are supported by internal communication channels such as direct mailings to supporters, e-marketing, the Sightsavers Ireland website and social media platforms.

    Sightsavers Ireland intends to build on the success of our PE work today and apply for the Global Citizenship Education stream of the - Irish Aid programme grant.

    Key Principles and Priorities : The design process should be informed by Irish Aid’s new Global Citizenship Education strategy, Civil Society and A Better World Policy.

    The programme outcomes should contribute to the goals of Sightsavers Ireland’s new strategy -.The programme design and related outputs should be consistent with the Dochas Code of Conduct on images and messages and the Irish Development Education Association’s IDEA’s Code of Good Practice for Development Education.

    The process should be informed by learning from the recently completed evaluation of Sightsavers Ireland’s current PE programme.

    Coherence should be established between the GCE programme and the Lot 1 / long term development programme design including linkages with organisations of people with disabilities.
