As a federal enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.
In a historic step, the areas formerly known as federally administered tribal areas (FATA) were merged into the province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in May 2018.
This merger will fundamentally alter the lives of 5 million citizens in the tribal areas and bring about long-awaited change in a region marked by decades of marginalization and instability.
For the first time, citizens in the newly Merged Areas will elect their representatives for local governments. The Programme assists the Pakistani partner to improve service provision to the population in the newly Merged Areas in the main result areas local governance, sector governance (basic education, health services) as well as constructive dialogue between the population and governmental actors.
